Who Is Saatva HD Mattress Ideal For?

With the Saatva HD, Saatva has successfully designed a sturdy mattress for plus-size sleepers. The mattress is engineered to support up to 500 pounds per side, giving it a combined weight capacity of up to 1,000 lbs.

To put this into perspective, most standard mattresses are designed to support up to 250 lbs. per side. The closer you are to this limit, the sooner the mattress starts sagging. This leads to a lack of proper central support, which can cause spine misalignment and all problems that come with it, including back pain.

The Saatva HD mattress is engineered with a high-durability support system ideal for heavyweight users. Its hybrid design focuses on universal comfort, making it a great mattress for all body types and sleep preferences.

Ideal For:

  • Average weight and plus-size sleepers weighing up to 500 lbs.

  • Average weight and plus-size stomach sleepers

  • Average weight and heavyweight back sleepers

  • Heavyweight side sleepers

  • Hot sleepers will enjoy Saatva HD’s cooling properties

  • Anyone with a bad back

  • Heavyweight couples

  • Anyone looking for a durable mattress

Saatva HD Firmness

At the time of this Saatva HD review, this mattress came in at only one level of firmness, which rates as firm. We scored it around 7 on the 10-point mattress firmness scale, meaning it’s slightly firmer than the industry standard medium-firm rating of 6.5.

Mattress firmness is usually subjective, though. Depending on your weight and sleeping position, it’s possible to have a varying opinion of the Saatva HD firmness level. In fact, there are some Saatva HD reviews that rate it around 8 on the firmness scale. We presume this rating is from average-weight individuals, particularly side and stomach sleepers.

Despite being a relatively firm mattress, the Saatva HD has a really nice balance of support and comfort. The offset coils have a strong pushback under the heavy weight of plus-size sleepers. But the Euro pillow top, latex and memory foam layers add a cushiony feel. The result is a balanced firmness that promotes lumbar support and pressure relief without burying you in foam.

If you prefer a plush mattress that lets you sink in slightly, check out the Saatva Classic, which comes with three firmness options.

Saatva HD Mattress Construction and Materials

With the Saatva HD, Saatva tries to fill a gap that most standard mattresses struggle with. A mattress for heavy people requires a greater focus on comfortable support and pressure relief. This is because people who are overweight are more prone to developing back problems if the mattress is not sufficiently supportive.

The best mattress for heavy couples also needs to be designed with durability in mind. Otherwise, the mattress may sag faster, leading to a reduction in the level of support.

When considering how the Saatva HD is constructed, it’s easy to see why this is consistently voted one of the best mattresses for heavy people. Saatva HD mattress layers are individually picked or designed with heavyweight people in mind.

The Saatva HD is a 7-layer mattress made of high-quality materials focusing on support and durability. Saatva’s commitment to sustainability is also evident in the materials used for the different layers.

Starting from the top, Saatva HD construction layers are:

Plush and breathable sleep surface

The sleeping surface is a 3” hand-tufted Euro pillow top quilted with plush fibers and comfort foams. Hand-tufting gives this mattress a luxurious look. The Euro pillow top technology adds to this mattress’ support and durability. The top cover is made of organic cotton, which is naturally softer and more breathable than regular cotton. This cover is further treated with Guardin, a blend of natural oils and minerals that inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Durable, cooling, and pressure-relieving support

Unlike most hybrid mattresses, the Saatva HD employs a 1.5” layer of Talalay latex as its primary comfort layer. Latex is firmer and more responsive than memory foam, so it doesn’t sink as much or trap you in a cocoon. Uniquely, this latex layer has 5 ergonomic zones thoughtfully spread to offer more support where you need it. Also, because it’s more bouncy, this latex layer makes turning easy, which is especially helpful to a plus-size person. Another added advantage of a latex comfort layer is temperature regulation. Latex is naturally more breathable than memory foam and doesn’t sleep as hot.

Luxurious, contouring comfort

The third layer is a 1.5” memory foam. This layer provides a deep, body-hugging feel, essential for relieving pressure in areas such as the shoulders and hips.

Dense comfort layer

Made of conventional polyfoam, this 2” layer adds support to the comfort section to prevent excessive sinkage. It also provides a buffer against the dense coil support system below it.

Responsive coil unit

Most of this mattress’ support comes from coils made from recycled steel. This coil system has three design elements that make it more suitable for plus-size sleepers. First is the coil type. The Saatva HD mattress uses offset coils, which offer firmer support than other traditional coils. Offset coils also tend to be more responsive and contouring than Bonnell and continuous wire coils. The second design element is the coil gauge. The Saatva HD mattress uses 12.5-gauge coils. A 12.5-gauge coil is the thickest you’ll find on any spring mattress, meaning it’s also the furthest you can go as far as firmness is concerned. Thirdly, this coil unit has a patented Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire that offers targeted support to your lower back to keep the spine aligned and reduce back pain.

No sagging edges

Surrounding the coil system are 6” high-density foam rails. These rails give the mattress a firm and stable feel, giving you a better sleeping surface - a bonus for larger couples.

Durable base support

The coiled unit rests on a 2” high-density polyfoam layer. This layer further enhances durable and comfortable support while minimizing motion transfer.

Saatva has a reputation for going far and beyond when picking materials for its mattresses. Most Saatva HD mattress reviews affirm that the choice of materials and the technologies used for this mattress are a perfect match for its intended users.

Is Saatva HD a Good Mattress?

If you are looking for the best mattress for heavy people (one that combines support, comfort, and durability), the Saatva HD will make a worthy investment.

By combining a hand-tufted Euro pillow top, natural latex layer, memory foam, and a low-gauge coil system, the Saatva HD lends itself to heavy-weight people who struggle to find a good mattress. Most Saatva HD mattress reviews agree that it ticks all the right boxes - support, comfort, pressure relief, edge support, and durability.

Saatva HD Back Pain

If you are buying Saatva HD for back pain relief, we bet you’ll find a lot to love about it. Saatva HD has multiple features that contribute to its orthopedic benefits. For start-ups, this mattress mainly focuses on support, essentially the most important element in a good mattress for back pain.

Although medium-firm mattresses are generally best for back pain, plus-size individuals may prefer a slightly firmer mattress to prevent the spine from dipping excessively. The 5-zoned latex layer and the offset coil system combine to create a supportive mattress. Although not as contouring, the Saatva HD mattress provides sufficient pressure relief for sleepers above 250 lbs.

Saatva HD Cooling

Saatva HD reviews rave about this mattress’ ability to maintain a more neutral temperature. Saatva HD cooling features start with an organic cotton cover, which is typically more breathable than regular cotton. It also allows moisture to evaporate more freely, reducing sweating. The latex layer is made of Talalay, which is naturally the most breathable of all latex foams.

Another feature that makes Saatva HD for hot sleepers a good choice is the coil system. The space between the coils promotes better airflow, preventing heat buildup in the memory foam and polyfoam layers above it.

Lastly, because the Saatva HD is a firm mattress with moderate sinkage and mild contouring, air can flow freely around your body. Generally, these features make the Saatva HD a breathable mattress and a good choice for hot sleepers with a higher body weight.

Saatva HD Motion Isolation

Saatva HD motion isolation score is average to slightly below average compared to most hybrid mattresses. But this is not surprising for a hybrid mattress with offset coils and latex. The offset coil types used for its support system have more motion transfer than individually pocketed coils.

While its foam layers may help absorb some movement and reduce partner disturbance, their firm feel reduces this ability. That said, there aren’t many complaints regarding motion transfer in most reviews of Saatva HD mattresses.

Saatva HD Edge Support

What the Saatva HD lacks in motion isolation, it makes up for in edge-to-edge comfort. The construction materials and overall design result in strong edge support, making this one of the best mattresses for couples who want a mattress with a more usable sleep surface.

Offset coils are generally more supportive than Bonnell and continuous wire coils. Even better, the Saatva HD uses extra-thick coils that don’t budge easily. The latex layer and the firm feel also minimize sinkage across the sleeping surface and even along the perimeter.

Having said that, you’ll notice a little sinkage when sitting on the side of the bed. However, Saatva HD bed reviews agree that this mattress has adequate support when sleeping near the edge.

Saatva HD Sex and Couples

Intimacy on Saatva HD couldn’t be better! This mattress has all the attributes of a good mattress for sex, from its hybrid construction to its breathability and low-noise performance. Thanks to its coil system, this is an impressive responsive mattress, meaning it’s easy to make quick movements when changing sex positions.

Euro pillow tops and three foam layers atop the coil unit add comfort and pressure relief. This allows you to maintain your favorite positions without discomfort.

Another reason we recommend the Saatva HD for sex is that it’s quiet during intimacy. The strong edge support also adds to your romantic adventures by allowing you to explore different sex positions anywhere on the bed.

Saatva HD Off-gassing and Odor

There will be little to no off-gassing when your Saatva HD mattress arrives because this is not a bed in a box. Bed-in-a-box mattresses have a strong chemical smell because they are compressed into an air-sealed bag and stored in a warehouse until they are shipped to you. When you unpack the mattress and remove the plastic, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) start escaping into the air, causing the stench.

The Saatva HD is not compressed after manufacturing, meaning most off-gassing has already occurred at the warehouse. Of course, there will be a new mattress smell, but the odor duration will be significantly lower compared to most bed-in-a-box hybrids.

Another reason you shouldn’t worry about Saatva HD off-gassing is that this is an eco-friendly mattress made with non-toxic materials. Talalay latex is OEKO-TEX certified, meaning it doesn’t contain harmful substances. The polyfoam and memory foam layers are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they have been tested and found to be free from hazardous compounds, such as formaldehyde and heavy metals.

Saatva HD Sleeping Positions

Because the Saatva HD is engineered with heavy people in mind, it might feel too firm for some people below 230 lbs. However, this comes down to their sleeping position. In the following sections of this Saatva HD firm mattress review, we will give you an overview of who this mattress might be a good match for.

Icon
Saatva HD for Side Sleepers

Side sleepers do their best on a mattress with adequate support and contouring. Support is necessary to keep the spine aligned and minimize putting unnecessary pressure on parts that shouldn’t be under stress. Meanwhile, a mattress that contours a side sleeper’s body shape helps cushion their shoulders and hips to provide pressure relief.

The Saatva HD is a good mattress for side sleepers who weigh over 130 lbs. Side sleepers who weigh over 230 lbs. will particularly enjoy it the most because they are heavy enough to push through the foam layers and reap a good amount of pressure relief. Saatva HD for lightweight sleepers under 130 lbs. may feel too firm for their liking.

Icon
Saatva HD for Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers prefer a mattress with enough support for a healthy spinal alignment. The mattress also needs some give to cushion the chest, belly, hips, and knees.

The Saatva HD is a good mattress for stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds and above. Its firm build helps align their shoulders with their hips to promote spinal alignment. The plush Euro pillow top and foam layers provide adequate cushioning and pressure relief without causing the feeling of being buried in foam.

Icon
Saatva HD for Back Sleepers

Some lightweight back sleepers may appreciate the sturdy feel of the Saatva HD. But this mattress offers the best results for average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers. Like stomach sleepers, people who sleep on their backs prefer a strong and sturdy mattress with good contouring and pressure relief for their shoulders and lower back.

The Saatva HD is a good match for heavyweight back sleepers because it’s zoned. The latex layer and coil unit combine to provide more support around the lumbar area where most of an individual’s weight is concentrated.

Saatva HD Prices and Sizes:

The Saatva HD mattress cost is considerably higher than what most average hybrid mattresses are sold at. But its price range is not surprising for a hybrid mattress that combines thick offset coils, natural latex, memory foam, and a Euro pillow top with an organic cotton cover. These are premium materials and technology and will certainly drive the price of the mattress higher.

While the Saatva HD is not inexpensive, its value proposition makes it a worthy investment if you want a durable mattress that can accommodate a heavy person. Thanks to its high-quality materials, we expect the Saatva HD to pay for itself in terms of durability and consistently satisfying sleep experiences.

The Saatva HD mattress is currently available in only one height profile- 15.5 inches, and all standard mattress sizes:

  1. Twin

  2. Twin XL

Saatva HD Returns

Our Mattress Verdict

Having reviewed its construction, compatibility with different sleeping positions, and overall performance, it’s time for our final verdict on the Saatva HD mattress. Should you buy Saatva HD? Well, only you have the right answer to that. But based on our Saatva HD rating, you can tell that we are great fans of the Saatva HD mattress and its overall value to heavyweight people. It’s not the most affordable mattress on the market. However, that’s because Saatva does not cut corners when engineering the best mattress for heavy people and those who want a durable bed. This is reflected in the premium materials and designs used for the HD, including Euro pillow top, organic cotton cover, natural latex, memory foam, and extra-thick offset coils.
